Estimates only. PTO payout rights and tax withholding vary by state, employer policy, and individual circumstances. This is not legal, tax, or financial advice. Consult your state labor department or a qualified professional. See our methodology.

Tax figures assume eligible flat supplemental withholding: 22% federal below the annual $1 million threshold, payroll taxes, and an illustrative state rate. Employers may use other permitted methods. Prior wages are assumed to be zero unless entered; state rates and individual payroll deductions need confirmation with payroll.

Which deductions affect your payout?

Start with the gross amount: payable hours multiplied by the applicable hourly rate. This tool estimates the following deductions; your employer determines the actual payroll treatment.

  • Federal withholding: the optional 22% method for eligible separately identified supplemental wages, with 37% on the portion above $1 million in annual supplemental wages. The aggregate method is another permitted method and can produce a different amount.
  • Social Security: 6.2% up to the remaining 2026 wage base of $184,500. Wages already paid by the employer reduce the remaining base.
  • Medicare: 1.45%, plus 0.9% Additional Medicare withholding on wages the employer pays above $200,000.
  • State withholding: an illustrative rate for the selected state. Confirm the current rate and method with payroll. Local taxes and other deductions are not included.

See IRS Publication 15, the SSA wage base, and our methodology and limitations.

Withholding is not your final tax bill

Withholding is a prepayment. When you file, your total income, deductions, credits, and payments determine whether you receive a refund or owe more. A single payout withholding percentage does not establish that result.

A worked example

At $25 per hour, 80 payable hours gives $2,000 gross. Assuming eligible 22% federal withholding, no state income tax, and wages below the payroll thresholds, federal withholding is $440 and FICA is $153. The estimated deposit is $1,407 before other deductions.

Read the PTO tax guide for the difference between flat and aggregate withholding. Retirement contributions depend on plan eligibility and contribution limits; this tool does not model them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the tax rate on a PTO payout?+

A payout is taxable wages. Eligible supplemental payments may use 22% federal withholding or the aggregate method. Payroll taxes and applicable state withholding also apply. Withholding is not your final income-tax rate.

Is PTO payout taxed at a higher rate?+

A payout can increase taxable income, but there is no separate final income-tax bracket just for PTO. The withholding method can make deductions look different from a regular paycheck. Your annual return determines whether total withholding was too high or too low.

How do I estimate PTO payout after taxes?+

Multiply payable hours by the applicable pay rate, then estimate withholding. This calculator assumes the eligible flat federal method and an illustrative state rate. Enter wages already paid this year to account for federal payroll thresholds.

What if my state has no income tax?+

Federal income-tax withholding and payroll taxes can still apply. This estimate does not include local taxes, benefit deductions, or every payroll rule.
